Mosquito allergyUsually, most people will react negatively to bites and may suspect a mosquito allergy. Some people might believe they have a mosquito allergy, when actually their bodies are reacting to the anti-coagulants that are injected into the skin along with a female mosquito’s saliva. The saliva contains such ingredients to assure that your human blood does not clot around the nose, or proboscis of the mosquito while it is sucking.
You may have been bitten once or twice and not noticed any swelling, and this may mean that your mosquito allergy immunity is higher than some people. Children and animals seem to be affected more by bites, and sometimes you may not see any swelling or itching until you have been repeatedly bitten. Bites usually take 24 hours to become swollen, so unfortunately you may not realize how badly you have been bitten until it is too late.
To protect your body from suffering from a mosquito allergy, prevention is the best step. Using repellents with DEET is a great way to keep mosquitoes off of your skin. Combine mosquito repellants with other forms of protection like netting or mosquito traps. To ease the itching of bites, apply ice to cool the spots, and use lotions such as calamine or anti-itch medications.
