DEET and Citronella mosquito repellent

You are probably like most active hikers who always want to be prepared when going in the woods or hiking near streams.  Too often, campers and hikers will forget the essential protection of applying mosquito repellent.  You can use a mosquito repellent that is a cream, spray, oil, or roll on, and you will probably want to make sure the ingredients include DEET.
You can avoid mosquito bites by wearing mosquito repellent, protective clothing, and staying away from known mosquito infested areas.  The way that repellents work is that they make the areas of the human unattractive to the mosquito, keeping them from biting.  Repellants come with chemical ingredients like DEET, or from plant derived sources like Citronella.
Another smart way to avoid mosquito bites during the day is to wear light colored khaki clothing, which does not attract mosquitoes.  Mosquitoes are often drawn to bright floral colors like reds and yellows because they associate those colors with flowers and nectar.  If you are hiking during the day, you might want a mosquito repellent that contains sunscreen as well.  There are so many brands to choose from; make sure you compare ingredients and strength.
